Important Message Regarding Pain Medications

July 07, 2020

My Dear Friends,

I love the practice of Rheumatology and have always felt like my patients deserved the same level of pain management treatment that President John F. Kennedy received.

With the current public expressions of concern for patients to have access to pain management during the COVID-19 crisis, I was hopeful that we might be able to continue providing safe and effective pain management therapies.

However, our current legal and political environments do not agree. And, unfortunately, another physician, one of my colleagues, has fallen victim to an environment that is not forgiving of complications to treatments for patients who suffer from chronic pain.

It is abundantly clear to me that families and society do not want these treatments to be available. Therefore, I will immediately begin reducing patients to even lower doses of pain medications and may shortly discontinue this service completely.

I will refer those patients who cannot get by with lower doses to pain management providers – if there are any left in practice. I simply can no longer jeopardize our clinic and the other treatments that are available to arthritis sufferers.

I encourage everyone to join the political process until such time as conditions for helping chronic pain victims changes.

Sincerely,
Craig W. Carson, M.D.

What to know for your Telehealth appointment:

At the time of your appointment, your provider will initiate a video call with you. Please take some time and review the below instructions to prepare for your appointment.

  • Your provider will call you at the time of your appointment. Please give them a 30-min grace period as they may be running behind.
  • Make sure your cell phone is charged.
  • Try to be on WiFi instead of cellular. Cellular data is limited, making video calls less reliable.
  • Understand that the appointment will be billed to you (or your insurance carrier) like a normal appointment.
  • Copays may still apply and will be billed after the appointment.
  • If you have an Apple iPhone, your provider will call you via FaceTime.
  • If you have an Android based device (Samsung, Google Pixel, LG, Motorola, etc...) your provider will call you via Google Duo.
Apple FaceTime
  • Make sure FaceTime is enabled on your phone.
  • Under settings -> FaceTime, ensure that you are reachable at the cell phone number on file with your provider.
  • If you've never used FaceTime before, try making a video call to a friend or family member to make sure it is working.
  • Make sure you are not in a noisy environment.
Android Google Duo
  • Google Duo is a free video calling app available for both Android and Apple devices.
  • You don't need to have a Google account to use the app.
  • Make sure you have installed the Google Duo app on your phone or tablet device.
  • After installing the app, open it and complete the short setup to link it to your cell phone number.
  • Allow Google Duo access to your camera and microphone (contact access is optional).
  • If you've never used Google Duo before, try making a video call to a friend or family member to make sure it is working.
  • Make sure you are not in a noisy environment.

Telehealth FAQs

Q.
Do I need a smartphone in order to do Telehealth?
A.
While it is possible to use Google Duo from a laptop via their webpage, the setup is much more complicated. At this time, we are only officially supporting connections from Android and Apple smartphone and tablet devices.
Q.
Is Telehealth required for my appointment?
A.
No. As an essential medical facility, the Oklahoma Arthritis Center is still open during normal business hours. If you would prefer to come in for a normal office visit, we will be here. However, as we understand the need to socially distance as much as possible, we are offering Telehealth for those that don't feel comfortable coming into the office.
Q.
How will I schedule my next appointment after my Telehealth visit?
A.
A patient services representative will call you at a later time to schedule your next appointment. Please be patient with us, and allow a few days for them to call you back for scheduling.
Q.
Is Telehealth allowed for all appointment types?
A.
Some appointment types simply can't be done via Telehealth. Please contact the office for more information.
Q.
Is Telehealth going to become the new normal?
A.
Telehealth appointments are very limiting. In order to provide a high level of care for our patients, we think it is important to be able to have our patients come in for a full office visit so that we can truly monitor progress. We are offering Telehealth as a way to get through the current COVID-19 crisis, but it is not part of our long-term plans.
Q.
Will I still be charged for the visit?
A.
Yes, a Telehealth visit is just like a regular office visit. You will still be charged for the visit, and depending on your insurance, you may also be responsible for a copay.
Q.
What if I needs labs drawn?
A.
If your provider needs you to have labs drawn, you can come in the office at any time to have that done. Stop by the front desk to check-in for a lab draw, then wait in the normal lab draw waiting area. There is often no wait, or very minimal wait time for lab draws.
Q.
What if I need a radiology exam done?
A.
Reception will call you to schedule the radiology exam after your appointment. Please be patient with us, and allow a few days for them to call you back for scheduling.
